Do you need a cover letter in India? When it helps, and a template that works
A cover letter is optional for many Indian job portals but helps when you apply directly to a company, to multinationals, for senior roles, for career changes, or when the posting asks for one. Keep it to 250 to 350 words in three or four short paragraphs: why this role, two or three relevant achievements, how you meet the key requirements, and a confident close.
- Optional for most portal applications, valuable for direct, senior and career-change applications
- 250 to 350 words, three or four paragraphs
- Lead with why this role and company
- Prove fit with two or three quantified achievements
- Never repeat your resume line by line
Many job seekers in India skip the cover letter, and on many portals nobody reads it. But in the right situations, a short, specific letter is what gets you shortlisted.
When a cover letter helps
- You're applying directly to a company or emailing a hiring manager.
- The role is at a multinational or a company with a global hiring process.
- You're applying for a senior or leadership role.
- You're changing careers and need to explain the move.
- The posting asks for one, which is also a test of whether you read instructions.
The structure
Paragraph 1: Why this role. Name the role and what draws you to the company, based on what the job description or their website says.
Paragraph 2: Proof. Two or three achievements most relevant to their needs, with numbers.
Paragraph 3: Fit. How you meet the key requirements, and how you'd approach the first months.
Paragraph 4: Close. A short, confident line inviting a conversation.
Keep it to 250 to 350 words.
A template you can adapt

I'm applying for the [Role] position at [Company]. [One specific thing from the job description or company] stood out to me, because [why it matters to you].
In my current role at [Company], I [achievement with a number]. Before that, I [second achievement]. Both required [key skill from the job description], which is central to this role.
You're looking for someone who can [requirement 1] and [requirement 2]. I've done both: [one line of evidence]. In my first months, I'd focus on [one or two priorities].
I'd welcome the chance to discuss how I can help [team or goal]. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely, [Your name]
Mistakes to avoid
- Opening with "I am writing to express my interest in..."
- Repeating your resume line by line.
- Generic praise for the company that could apply anywhere.
- Placeholders left in by mistake, like "[Company]".
- Going over one page.

Frequently asked questions
Do Indian companies read cover letters?
Some do, especially for direct applications, multinational roles and senior positions. On high-volume portals, the resume usually matters more.
How long should a cover letter be?
250 to 350 words, in three or four short paragraphs, fitting comfortably on one page.
Should I send the cover letter as a file or in the email body?
If you're emailing, put a shorter version in the email body and attach your resume. If a portal has an upload field, attach the letter as a PDF.
Can I use the same cover letter for every job?
Use the same structure, but tailor the first two paragraphs to each role. Generic letters are easy to spot.
